KōBEE Wins 2018 Innovation & Environment Award

Years of research, field trials and formulation development of the ground-breaking KōBEE Bee Nutrition tonic were recognised when the New Zealand Seaweeds team were presented with the Ravensdown Innovation & Environment Award for 2018 at the National Horticultural Field Day this year.

Awarded to those businesses highlighting technology and innovation that is integral in horticulture today, the Ravensdown Innovation & Environment award celebrates advances in these areas that New Zealand businesses are using to transform and grow the horticulture industry.

“We found KōBEE to be the clear winner of the 12 products nominated for this award,” confirms Ravensdown Operations Manager and presenter of this prestigious award, Grant Whitfield.

The major innovation which set KōBEE ahead of the other entries was to do with improving the health of bees particularly considering the significant role these play in horticulture and pollination.

Grant Whitfield explains further, “It is a well-known fact that bees are struggling so anything that helps with their health and the sustainability of bees, we believe is outstanding.”

General Manager, Peter Cowley, accepted the award on behalf of New Zealand Seaweeds at a special luncheon hosted by BNZ.

“Winning this award is a very special result for our whole team. It’s a real boost in confidence for all of those who have been involved in developing this unique range of products since its inception.”

Although KōBEE has been used by beekeepers working in partnership with New Zealand Manuka Group for over three years now, the product was only released to the general public through Farmlands in March of this year.

KōBEE is unique in that it is produced from a proprietary blend of virgin seaweeds specifically created by New Zealand Seaweeds to enhance the health and vitality of bees and hives.

Peter Cowley continues, “While there have been similar products created in the past, these have come from a seaweed bi-product of another manufacturing process whereas our product uses freshly collected seaweed combined specifically for this purpose.”

The Ravensdown Innovation & Environment Award is an integral part of the BNZ National Horticultural Field Day held in Hastings each year.Previous winners of this award include Scionon, RockitApples and Hydratorq with their BioFume Ozone product.

Ravensdown presented New Zealand Seaweeds with a cheque for $1,000 in prize money which the company will be donating to a local community charity.
